Meet Daisy: Service Dog FAQ

Many of you have met Katherine, our Outreach Intern, and Daisy, her service dog. It’s clear that Katherine and Daisy have a strong connection, but often other questions come up regarding Daisy’s role. We hope to answer some of your questions below, and Katherine is happy to answer any others you may have. She can be reached by email at info@friendsoffirefighters.org.

What is Daisy’s role?

Daisy “works” for Katherine assisting her with symptoms of PTS and traumatic brain injury, which she suffered while deployed as a US Marine

How long has Daisy been with Katherine?

Since 2009

Can I pet Daisy?

Yes, just make sure to ask Katherine first

How can I tell if Daisy is on or off duty?

Daisy is always working when she is with Katherine, but she is officially on duty when wearing her service dog vest

Can I give Daisy a piece of my food?

Daisy will probably enjoy that, just make sure to ask Katherine first

Is Daisy allowed to enter places where pets are otherwise not permitted?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it is required that privately owned businesses that serve the public allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed.

Where can I read more about service dogs and service members?

Here and here are articles with more examples and information

Yoga Benefits

Exercise, including yoga, has been proven to reduce stress, but yoga specifically has been proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. This is because yoga “encouraged mindfulness, which fortifies the body-brain connections and helps rebuild senses of control and safety after a traumatic experience,” an article on yoga and PTSD reports.

An ongoing study by Harvard Medical School of those suffering from PTSD shows that more than half of participants saw reduced symptoms as a result of practicing yoga. The same article from above also states that although yoga is not the cure-all, “it has already become an important part of the toolkit used to treat PTSD effectively and efficiently.”

Yoga has a long laundry list of benefits, not just for those suffering from PTSD. Here are 38 from Yoga Journal to get you started.

Yoga is one part of the toolkit you will find here at Friends of Firefighters for active and retired FDNY firefighters and your family members. Classes are free, all levels are welcome, and mats are provided.

Cooking Traditions in the Firehouse

DNAinfo New York attended this month’s On the Arm Breakfast to conduct research on the traditions of cooking in FDNY firehouses. Serena Solomon reports, “For generations, the FDNY has made collaborative cooking and sharing homemade meals a tradition, in what current and retired firefighters call a cornerstone of their bond.” Knowing this, several years ago Friends of Firefighters established a monthly On the Arm Breakfast as a way to bring everyone together in the kitchen. The Breakfast still holds strong today, offering a comfortable environment where a made to order meal prepared by retired firefighters Tony Catapano and Pete Calascione can be enjoyed.

Tony and Pete have brought what they learned in the kitchen of their firehouse to Friends of Firefighters and have become the official cooks of the organization. They were interviewed and photographed by Serena at the most recent breakfast. Read the full article here, and don’t miss the rest of the photos from the Breakfast as well as one of Tony’s very own recipes!

On the Arm Breakfasts are held the second Wednesday of every month between 8-11AM as part of our Peer Support Program. Join us at Friends of Firefighters for made to order breakfast prepared by retired firefighters for active and retired FDNY firefighters, their family members, and volunteers and friends of our organization. Enjoy good company and good food – eggs, pancakes, french toast, bacon, potatoes, pastries, bagels, juice, coffee, and more!
