Stress Awareness Month: Biofeedback

Stress Awareness Month Tip
DNAInfo.com featured the biofeedback program at FoF and explained that the training can be used “to help firefighters recreate tense firefighting situations — and learn how to keep themselves calm amid the stress they induce… firefighters can learn to focus on steady diaphragmatic breathing and relaxing muscles to cope with moments of anxiety.”

Stress Awareness Month: Journal Writing

Stress Awareness Month Tip
Justin Kennard, LCSW, one of our counselors, says regular journal writing can be beneficial to emotional health. It’s a way to release, and become aware of, powerful thoughts and feelings that cause stress. This process of actively letting thoughts flow out of you into your private journal can provide relief and greater understanding about yourself. Use paper or electronic form, bring it with you wherever you go, and journal daily, weekly, or as needed.

Stress Awareness Month: Sleeping

Stress Awareness Month Tip
If you have trouble falling asleep try these five steps: 1. Dim the lights 1 hour before bedtime; 2. Avoid looking at anything with a screen; 3. Ten minutes before bedtime, begin a focused mindfulness exercise; 4. If your mind begins to wander, notice that it wandered and get back on track; 5. Get in bed and focus on your breath.

Monday, April 20: This Week at FoF

LISTEN, PROTECT, & CONNECT WORKSHOP 4/25
Join us on Saturday, April 25 from 10AM-1PM for Listen, Protect, & Connect Workshop in partnership with the Mental Health Association of NY.

WHAT: Listen, Protect, and Connect is a psychological first aid program that teaches participants to recognize the warning signs for psychological distress and PTSD, especially helpful in a disaster.

WHY: Just as people learn CPR or first aid to help during medical emergencies, knowing how to provide psychological first aid is an important thing you can do for your family, friends, and neighbors’ well-being.

WHAT TO EXPECT: This workshop is informative, clear, and engaging and allows the participants to interact as much or as little with the group and instructor as you wish, depending on your comfort level.

Stress Awareness Month Tip
Exercise is proven to reduce stress. If you aren’t able to go for a run or take a gym class, try taking the stairs instead of the escalator or taking a walk during your lunch break. FoF offers free weekly yoga classes for FDNY firefighters and your family in Rockaway and Staten Island.

Stress Awareness Month Tip
Stress Awareness Month Tip from FoF: Lauren Johnson, LMFT, one of our counselors, recommends focusing on activities and hobbies that you enjoy as a way to decrease stress. It’s easy to get caught up in a busy schedule, but make sure to take time to crochet, read, meet with friends, take a spin class, cook dinner, or whatever activity or hobby it is that brings you joy.

Stress Awareness Month: Breathing & Meditation

Stress Awareness Month Tip

Our Biofeedback Coach, Rita Desyatnik, says deep breathing daily is a great way to relieve stress and get acquainted with meditation. The Seattle Seahawks’ sports psychologist, whose techniques are similar to biofeedback coaching provided at FoF, recommends that those “new to meditation start off with six minutes of deep breathing”. Among other benefits, breathing and meditation release tension and relax the mind and body.
