Firehouse Kitchen Talk for FDNY with Special Needs Family Members

Thank you to everyone who came out for last night’s Firehouse Kitchen Talk. Special thanks to Captain Eugene Kananowicz (aka K9) from Engine 53 and Captain Michael Doda from Ladder 148 for presenting on their new support group for FDNY firefighters with special needs family members. We are so glad this group has formed as it’s a great way to find social connection, resources and information from others going through similar experiences. For more information or questions, email Captain K9 at ek953@icloud.com. As always, thank you to Gary Sinise Foundation for their financial support.

Important Update Re: Tommy Phelan 5K, April 29th

Friends of Firefighters entered a contract with Generosity 5K in December 2017 to hold a race on Sunday, April 29th at Prospect Park. This is a race that we have partnered with G5K in prior years and one that Tommy Phelan ran in. When Tommy passed in March, his family and firehouse strongly supported our naming the race in Tommy’s honor. However, there were existing requirements mandated by Generosity 5K that made registration prohibitive for many people.

With thanks to Generosity 5K, we are thrilled to announce that they are releasing us from the requirement of raising an additional $200 per runner. There will only be the $25 registration fee. This is something we have worked hard to achieve and we hope it makes it possible for all to join us on Sunday. The one caveat is that all participants that register from here on will receive only a bib, not a medal or Generosity t-shirt. Friends of Firefighters will have t-shirts to sell on the day of the race; the cost will be $20. There will be a post-race party at Farrell’s, one of Tommy’s favorite watering holes.

The funds raised will go to direct services to FDNY firefighters, active and retired and their families. An additional $500 will go to establish a scholarship in Tommy’s name to SUNY Maritime College.

With that out of the way, please go to www.generositybrooklyn.com/fof and register to join us on Sunday. If you have any trouble registering, call our office 718-643-0980.

We look forward to seeing you at the race!
