FAQ / Crisis Hotline & Internet Counseling Program

Friends of Firefighters 24/7 Crisis Hotline and Internet Counseling Program are two of our newest programs, so it makes sense if there are some questions concerning them. We thought the best way to provide you with all the answers is a FAQ list. Feel free to contact us directly with any questions we may have missed, about these two programs or our others.

Who are the operators? Trained crisis counselors who are knowledgeable on FDNY culture and Friends of Firefighters.Is this confidential? Like all FoF services, ICP is independent from the FDNY and confidential.

Is there a fee attached? Like all FoF services, ICP is free of charge and health insurance is not accepted.

Do they ask for my social security number? No. Nothing is required. Crisis counselors may ask demographic information, which the caller can decline to answer.

What happens when I call? You will hear an automatic recording to stay on the line to be connected to the first available counselor. You also have the option to receive technical support, or sign up, for FoF’s Internet Counseling Program.

Will I experience a wait? You may experience a wait when you call, depending on the call volume at that time. Wait time can sometimes be up to 5 minutes. We encourage you to stay on the line and remember support is on its way.

Will the counselor offer me resources? Yes, the counselors have a list of Friends of Firefighters services and other helpful resources around New York City.

Is there a maximum talk time with the counselor? No.

Is it required that someone follow up with me? It is not required but the crisis counselor will offer you a follow up call by a Friends of Firefighters team member.

How do I access the hotline? Call 1-866-338-7717 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Do they ask for my social security number? No. The only required information asked of you is your e-mail address.

If this is anonymous, why is my e-mail address required? E-mail is required to set up your account so you can log in, and for a counselor to contact you should there be any issues.

To whom does the information go? A counselor at Friends of Firefighters.

Are the programs really that helpful? Yes. 8 out of 10 users experience improved health.

Are the programs user friendly? Yes. Should you encounter an issue, technical support is available to you via phone or e-mail.

Is there a video chat component? No, you will not be video chatting with anyone.

Do I have to follow a schedule? You can access the programs at your own convenience.

How is my progress tracked? After each session you will be prompted to fill out a questionnaire, which is used to track your progress.
