Over the past 15 years we have served numerous active and retired FDNY members and their families. Hearing them speak of their positive experiences here at Friends of Firefighters validates what we do and encourages others to seek our services. We invite you to read through testimonials of those we have served. If you are interested in sharing your Friends of Firefighters story, please contact us.

“Thank you, FoF, for not only helping the firefighter but his wife and kids too” - Wife of retired FDNY Firefighter

“Friends of Firefighters is a great organization that helps us to live happier and healthier lives.” - FDNY Engine 44, Manhattan
“Friendly warm staff that make you feel comfortable. Thank you for all you’ve done to help make life more bearable for my family and me.” - Wife of FDNY Firefighter
“Thanks for all you guys and girls do for us. Great to see a group of people who literally care about our health and well-being.” – Anthony Perrone, Active FDNY Firefighter
“Before calling Friends of Firefighters I was suffering from anxiety and frustration on the job.  I am a 16 year member and in the last couple of years every time the tones would go off I would lose my breath, my heart rate would go through the roof, and I would sometimes, for a second, forget what to do.  Rita has shown me through the biofeedback how to control my breathing, increase my lung capacity, lower my frustration levels and most of all decrease my anxiety.  All this has also helped in my everyday life.  The biofeedback program has helped me increase my awareness of self-control, has helped me regain concentration, focus, and awareness.”  - Active FDNY Firefighter
“Thank you for setting us up to go see the Stanley Cup last week. It was one of the few days I have had off since Sandy and a day that was needed! Friends of Firefighters will always sit “Top Shelf” in mine and my family’s hearts. Thanks again.”
-Eric Mundy, Active FDNY
“Friends of Firefighters has been of great help to me through their counseling services. Without their help I do not know where I would be today.  FoF provided me with individual counseling, marriage counseling, and anger management which I was desperately in need of.  The events of WTC 9/11/01 pushed me over the boundaries of reckless behavior and logical thinking.  If not for the great staff and the dedication of Nancy Carbone, I feel I might not have made it.  I thank Nancy and FoF for giving me my life back, and my family thanks her too.  My family has their husband, father, and friend again.”

“I am a NYC firefighter that has been associated with Friends of Firefighters since its inception. My family and I have received services from Friends of Firefighters in the past and I have volunteered my services to this organization whenever they asked. Over the years, I can say that Nancy Carbone has become a dear friend. When firefighters need help, she is there.”

“I am a Retired Firefighter.  Having spent approximately 30 years with the FDNY, I gradually learned how to work effectively in stressful situations.  After I retired I learned that stress doesn’t stop after you leave the job.  Stuff happens.  Difficult situations still occur.  My old Firehouse coping methods didn’t work anymore.  My support group (the Brothers in the Firehouse) were not there for me now.  Just as water pressure had to be regulated to put out a fire, I needed to regulate my energy, concentration, and focus to deal with everyday major and minor emergencies.  There are plenty.

I began the biofeedback training program about 3 months ago.  Upon starting the very simple and easy to use breathing and relaxation exercises, I noticed immediate and positive results, which only increased over time.  I became more relaxed and focused.  I was able to clear away the mental clutter that had been blocking my ability to find solutions to problems, both large and small.  As a result, my energy increased and I am now able to get things done more efficiently and with less stress. Life is more pleasant for me and the people around me.  This has allowed me to enjoy life much more fully.  I only wish I could have learned this technique when I was a young Firefighter.  I think my training and experience would have come to me much more quickly and effectively.  I think this is a great program for Firefighters of all ages.”

“I came to Friends of Firefighters in September 2011 after seeing the Bio Pod at the Fire Museum at the annual 9/11 memorial gathering. I had signed up and received a call from Rita to come in and try it out. I’ve been coming for 7 weeks now and also have received acupuncture treatment from Mary Hart. I’ve been very impressed with the results from both of these modalities. I’ve also been impressed by the constant work being performed by staff and volunteers doing renovations and administering the many services available. Well done!”

“I am a daughter of a retired FDNY firefighter who committed suicide in 2008.  My father suffered from depression after being hurt in a fire and then retired from the department because of herniated discs in his spine.  My father loved being a firefighter; he loved saving people from harm’s way and having to retire broke his heart.

My father was so religious and so outgoing; I had a hard time believing that he took his own life. My father was the life of the party; he made everyone laugh and would always go above and beyond for others.  He was athletic, handsome, and charming.  He had all the qualities of a person that would make you think how can he do something like this?”

“As a young man with minimal direction, I was lucky to find many different types of work which I found to be relatively unimportant and not very satisfying.  Yes, I said “lucky” because I learned what I did NOT want to do for the rest of my working life.  Although I didn’t know what career path to take, I knew it had to be something important.  When the opportunity arose to apply for the position of Fireman in the FDNY, I took it because protecting lives and property is very important.  I must admit, I didn’t have a clue as to what I was getting into.”

“As a single person, what could I possibly do to end my anger issues about the current wars and what could I do to help any of our current and post veterans? F of FF’s [Friends of Firefighters] has filled those voids for me. It is probably the greatest social model invented for FF’s for the perpetual continuation of the greatest family and extended family in the world. Having lost my parents, F of FF’s and the FDNY has helped me cope. I know there is someone to turn to, always.”

“As the 10th anniversary of 9-11 approaches I sincerely hope that these words can find their way onto the web site of Friends of Firefighters. This past decade has been like no other, and I truly believe that there are so many of us who will always define these last 10 years based upon the tragic events of that one morning, September 11, 2001. Along with the sorrow filled nights, days, weeks, months, and years that have followed.”

“Influence can be defined as the effect one person has on another. It is the power of a person’s compelling force on the actions, behavior and opinions of others. I consider myself fortunate because there are many people in my life that have impacted me in a positive way. One person in particular is my grandfather. He has taught me to be humble yet proud, respectful and strong, but most of all dedicated and courageous.”
